Local Activities Keep Kids Active During Holidays

As many parents are aware, winter break is fast approaching. While kids are undoubtedly super excited to have time off of school, parents often feel at least a little bit of “how do I keep them busy?” dread.

Luckily a few local businesses have special family-friendly offerings to keep the kiddos happy during their days off.

One great option, especially if trying to lure kiddos away from the ever-present screen and get them moving a little, is the local YMCA.

The Marshfield Area YMCA offers the Vacation at the Y program for children from 4k to 6th grade.

“This program is action-packed fun for kids and peace of mind for parents, which includes swimming, snacks, crafts and sports activities,” said Amanda Blaskowski, Youth & Family Director at the Marshfield Area YMCA.

Care is available from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $30 per day.

Blaskowski thinks the Y is a great option to get kids moving during break.

“It’s easy for kids to become more inactive during school breaks. In today’s society many children focus on their screen time for entertainment.  It is more important than ever that kids are kept active on days off of school. To help parents, we create fun new activities to keep kids up and moving during their time at the Y,” she said.

Other active choices for the holiday break, if weather cooperates, are ice skating at Pickle Pond or tubing at Powers Bluff. For more information on that, click here for Explore’s outdoor fun article.

Another fun option during break is checking out the special matinee offerings at Rogers Cinema. There are a variety of movie options out now, with the best offerings for kids being the two animated options: Disney’s new Moana and Sing.

After the movies, join in the special holiday festivities at the library.

“The Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library is also offering a special Grinch Party during break,” said Children’s Librarian Kim Ropson. “The party will be on December 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and include a craft, food, Grinch trivia, and the last half hour of the program will be showing the 30 minute original How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Whether movie buffs or looking for some physical activity or craft time, there are plenty of local options for families this winter break.  For more information or details, please check out each organization’s website or Facebook pages.
