The Sports Den’s Bike Poker Ride Returns with Star Wars Theme

The Sports Den

The Sports Den’s successful Poker Ride is back for another year on May 4, encouraging bikers of all ages to cycle around the city and try earning their best hand.

During the family-friendly event, bikers gather cards from each participating business and return to The Sports Den before 3 p.m. The rider with the best hand wins a pot of gift certificates.

The event is a fundraiser for the Marshfield Mountain Bike Club, a youth club sport for grades 6-12.

“It’s a great club activity that gets kids on bikes,” said Breanna VanDeHey, manager of The Sports Den. “Kids play basketball and football, but once they get done with high school, how often are they doing those activities? The Mountain Bike Club teaches them the skills and abilities to enjoy mountain biking, which is something they can do throughout their life.”

Since the day falls on Star Wars commemoration day, the theme is “May the Fourth be With You.” Bikers are encouraged to show up with their best costume. A concession stand will have Star Wars-themed food items for purchase from 11-3 p.m., proceeds benefiting the club.

“Our overall objective is to eventually raise enough money to be able to afford some bikes that low-income kids can then use for race season,” said VanDeHey.

After checking in at The Sports Den, each participant gets a numbered wristband. Each person’s number gets written on the card to prevent swapping. Businesses may provide challenges to earn a card. From 10-3 p.m., riders can plot their route and try to gather their best hand

“It’s a really fun event,” said VanDeHey. “There is some strategy involved because not all of the businesses are open right at [the starting] time.”

Pre-registration is $10 a person until April 30, and $15 the day of registration. To register, stop by The Sports Den or register online on Explore Marshfield at this link.

No payment is necessary to ride, just to play, and all ages are welcome. A demo fleet of electric assist bicycles by Specialized can be tested during the event. Helmets are required.
