Sport Popular in City
A popular sport in Marshfield, pickleball can be played by virtually anyone young and old. Described as a cross between badminton, tennis, and ping pong, the sport is played on a badminton-sized court with paddles and a small plastic ball (not a pickle). The most common arrangement is doubles, meaning getting a game started is easy with just a few players.
There are multiple locations in Marshfield to get started. Some require a fee for use, but the outdoor courts are free during the warmer seasons.
The Parks and Recreation department operates two courts at the Oak Avenue Community Center on Tuesdays from 6-8 pm and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. year-round. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the office (211 E 2nd Street), 10 for $22 with racquets and balls provided. Or, there is a drop-in fee of $2.50. No reservations are needed since it it a drop-in program, nor is a partner necessary. Note that there is no pickleball on holidays or during elections. Outdoor courts are available at the S. J. Miller Recreation area at no cost.
Adult YMCA members can pickleball for free in the gymnasium from 11:30-1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Drop-in free is $6.50 for non-members. Equipment is provided, or bring your own. Beginner orientation is held fifteen minutes before start.
