Parent Survival Tips: Fair Edition

I know many of us Moms are planning on taking our “littles” to the fair. If you are new to the fair or new to taking kids to the fair, here are some tips:

1.    Have your kids wear an old pair of tennis shoes. I know it is hot and sandals seem more ideal, but there is often a lot of mud and animal waste at the fair. So much easier to either clean off old shoes or in worst-case-scenario, throw them out. A lot better than getting that grime off little’s feet or the crevices of sandals you want to continue to use.

2.    Speaking of grime, take some wipes to the Fair. They are great for wiping icky hands or wiping off a place to sit or eat…depending on your comfort level with germs.

3.    Try to head off some tantrums…we all know our own kids best, but something that has worked well with my kids is to help them know what to expect. One thing I go over is how many rides or games that they will be able to play. Then while at the Fair, I give them part of their tickets to help carry. If I really empower them to make decisions on what is worth their tickets…I tend to get less tantrums because they feel they have had some say.  (Of course all kids are different, just sharing what has worked for me in the past!)

4.    If you are a breastfeeding mom, it is always helpful to scope out if there is going to be a nursing area. I have you covered! According to Adam Fischer, Executive Director of the Central Wisconsin State Fair, there will be a nursing area set up as part of the first aid room, which is located on the first floor of the Marv Davis Administrative Building.

5.    Bring a small backpack of some sort for you or your child to carry. The Fair often has giveaways at booths, and of course there are little prizes from the games. It is nice to have somewhere to store all these goodies and still have a couple of free hands to chase after kids with our use to eat the delicious food the fair has to offer.

6.    Get the most bang for your buck! The Fair runs special days where your family’s dollar might stretch a little further. To help you out here is a list ticket prices and daily specials with family-friendly deals highlighted. Explorers, hope these tips help make your Fair experience wonderful!
