Card and Collectible Show Growing in Popularity
by Malachi David – This Saturday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Marshfield Mall will be hosting a Sports Card Show. This event will be sponsored by Sports Scene, a card and collectible store in the mall.
This show will be the third one that the Sports Scene has sponsored. These shows
happen a few times each year.
Al Kieffer, the owner of Sports Scene, discussed how there used to be shows every
couple of months. “People stopped coming because the buyers kept seeing the same stuff.
There was no new blood, so everything sort of died for a while… So I said, the store will start sponsoring one in the spring and one in the fall.”
As the shows have grown in popularity, Kieffer decided last year to start having one in
the winter. The event was received well enough that he decided to have it again this year.
“So far we have about fourteen tables for the event,” Kieffer said, “The guys like that it is
priced right for them, and I seem to keep drawing people from farther away.”
The show draws many local sellers, but some come from as far away as Sheboygan.
There are cards and collectibles for all sorts of collectors or enthusiasts. Whether you
are an avid collector or new to the hobby, you are bound to find something for you. There are cards, jerseys, figurines, and bobbleheads, just to name a few.
The important thing for Kieffer is that these shows are not all about money, “It’s a real
neat feeling, these old guys will come walking in and pull out a big ol’ list and then they grab a chair and sit right down. They will spend hours out there looking through cards.”
“A lot of these guys are collectors before they are sellers. To them it is a hobby, an
expensive hobby, but they enjoy it.”
The parting message Kieffer wanted to give is that this event isn’t just for his store or the
guys who set up tables, “A part of why I put events on is to bring people into the mall to help sponsor all the stores in the mall. It is an opportunity to bring people into the community and it helps the mall survive.”
Again, this event will be held at the Marshfield Mall on Saturday, December 2nd. It runs
from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. If you have any questions, you can call Al at 715-384-9977.
