Local Fall Porch Display Ranks High in National Contest

For those with a front porch, fall is perfect opportunity to bring out your creative side.

Nick Peters, Garden Center manager at Schalow’s Nursery in Marshfield, put his skills to work this season by creating a trendy display for his porch. “Every year I’ve always done the typical bright red, yellow and orange,” he said. “Looking at the garden center in Marshfield, you see what’s trendy and new. Light green and subtle oranges was in style.”

His display includes white lanterns from Schalow’s, white pumpkins he grew himself, cornstalks cut in half and displayed atypically in a metal bucket, and a rustic door he picked up free from the curb. The result was a subtle and casual look for fall that’s easier to pull off than you might expect.

“These are all things people have in their homes already,” noted Peters. From there, it’s just a matter of thinking outside the box.

Peters entered his display in a nationwide front porch contest being held by the site, Garden Answer, which is run by a husband and wife team who post videos on gardening. He forgot about it until his photo appeared in one of the videos, and checking on Facebook, saw that his entry had already attracted hundreds more votes than the other pictures.

Currently, his front porch display has 1.6 thousand votes and is in second place. The winner will receive a $100 gift card to Proven Winners, a leading brand in annuals, perennials, and shrubs. If he wins, Peters would like to purchase flowers toward the gazebo in his town of Athens that he decorates every year.

“Even winning aside, the whole album of photos is so much inspiration for everybody around the country to see how everyone does it,” he said. “It’s really neat to see how everyone has a different spin on the fall and what the holiday means to them.”
