Elroy-Sparta Bike Trip Takes Riders Through Old Railroad Tunnels

Popular Bike Route Part of Rails-to-Trails

by Jess Trad – Join The Sports Den and Grace Lutheran Church of Marshfield on Saturday, August 18 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Riders can enjoy a fun-filled bike ride along the Elroy-Sparta trail. The group typically rides a total of 20 miles, passing through two tunnels and the abandoned Chicago & North Western Railroad bed. The three, century-old train tunnels are dark and cool, requiring riders to use flashlights.

This is the first year The Sports Den and Grace Lutheran Church are collaborating to host the event. “In the past, we have had 15-30 riders,” said Breanna VanDeHey, sales manager at The Sports Den. “The event is very low-key. We do not have a set distance or pace.”

Riders will meet at either The Sports Den (1202 S Central Ave Marshfield) or Grace Lutheran Church (11284 US Highway 10, Marshfield) in Marshfield at 8:00 AM, where they will then carpool to the Wilton Trailhead.

From there, the group typically bikes around 10 miles, stops for a picnic lunch, and turns around. The Sports Den and Grace Lutheran will provide fruit and sandwiches for riders. If desired, riders are also allowed to ride beyond the group or turn around early. It is not required that you stay with the group.

Riders above the age of 16 are required to have trail passes. These cost $5 for a day or $25 annually and are valid on any Wisconsin State trail. These passes can be purchased with the group when you arrive at the trail. All riders must wear helmets and bring headlights or flashlights for the dark tunnels. Riders are also encouraged to bring water bottles or beverages as these will not be provided.
