Chip’s Hamburgers Serves Up Longtime Favorites

Chip’s Charbroiled Hamburgers: ‘Like Cooking in Your Backyard’

As Marshfield’s first fast food restaurant, Chip’s Hamburgers continues to serve up its signature charbroiled hamburgers and crinkle cut fries.

“We’ll never get away from it,” said owner Steve Konrardy, who also operates Chip’s in Wisconsin Rapids. “It’s like cooking in your backyard.”

Located in an A-frame building on South Central reminiscent of the restaurant’s early look, the old-fashioned fast food joint has expanded its menu from those early days to include all the normal fast food favorites for a well-rounded meal.

That includes savory cheese curds that are a standout for their flavor, chicken breasts and nuggets, then dessert. Soft serve, a big cookie, root beer float, and a cherry pie christened a “Jack” are all options to finish off the meal.

Besides combo meals, diners with varying stomach sizes can choose their hamburger proportion, from a regular, to a ¼ pound Champ, to a ½ pound Double Champ with the works. Every hamburger is 100% beef and comes with pickle, onion, and special sauce. Alternatives to hamburgers include fish fillet and hot beef or ham.

Though side orders include onion rings and mac ‘n cheese bites, the fries have long been a favorite. Konrardy, who started out at Chip’s in high school as a cook, recalled the time his boss switched to straight cut and a customer wasn’t impressed: “He said, ‘If you don’t get these back, I’m never coming in again!’”

The crinkle cut fries came back to stay, and today Chip’s sticks to the customer favorites. “I like to keep what we have and do it right,” he said.

Eat in or drive-through every day at Chip’s Hamburgers at 1409 S. Central Ave. Hours are 10:30 to 9 p.m.
