History Rising from the Grave; The Organization, Growth and Care of Marshfield’s Cemeteries on the Hill. Marshfield’s oldest city cemeteries were established atop the hill on what is now St. Josephs Avenue in the late 1870s and early 1880s. From what was the city’s original two-section municipal cemetery, the cemetery now encompasses three cemeteries, Hillside Municipal Cemetery, Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, and Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, occupying more than 58 acres of burial sites. In this presentation, our Don Schnitzler will talk about the evolution of those cemeteries while sharing stories and images of past city residents resting there.
