Marshfield Offers Many Gluten-Free Options

Gluten-Free Offerings in Marshfield

It used to be that if you were gluten-free you were going to be eating most of your meals at home. There just weren’t many eating out options in town for those that had to be gluten-free because of an intolerance/allergy or chose to eat gluten free.

But the gluten-wary among us can now rejoice because there are lots of local options.

There are now bakeries, pizza parlors, restaurants, delis and even fast-food chains that are offering gluten-free options. Explore has provided a list below of restaurants that are advertising gluten-free options.

You might have read this article this far, but are still wondering. Ok, great, but what is gluten anyway?

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation,  “gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale – a cross between wheat and rye. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together.”

Those that suffer from celiac disease have a genetic autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine, which causes a myriad of unpleasant stomach/digestion issues.

Tina Borchardt, who suffers from celiac disease, sees a local shift in businesses that cater to the condition.

“Definitely, the restaurants, grocery stores and bakeries are offering more options and are accommodating to those with celiac disease and people choosing to remove gluten from their diet,” she said.

While there are many places now offering options, it is important to be your own advocate concerning your own level of sensitivity and concerns for cross contamination.

For those of us that are unaware, gluten can be cross-contaminated when a tool or area is used first for a gluten item and then later for a gluten-free item. For example, if you put regular bread in a toaster and then made gluten-free toast later, that toast would be contaminated with gluten crumbs.

Borchardt keeps this in mind when choosing places.

“I prefer to go to restaurants with a specific gluten-free menu because I trust they are informed on what that means, “ she said.

“It is also a treat to have JJ’s Bakery here in Marshfield with a separate gluten-free kitchen, “ Borchardt said.
