Is your child or teen stressed out?
Sign up for yoga via the UW-Extension 4-H SPIN club and learn to relax with breathing techniques and gentle poses that improve balance, flexibility, and strength. No 4-H membership is necessary, and the free classes are open to all youth from grades kindergarten to seniors in high school.
“Kids are busy. It’s a great thing for them to have downtime without a device in their hands,” said Christine Jensen, SPIN club leader. “Learning to relax through breathing and stretching clears their mind. They can concentrate better on school work, sleep better, have greater balance and be a more relaxed all-around youth.”
Yoga is great for kids that play sports, as it teaches the importance of warming up muscles and then stretching them afterwards, she added.
This is the first SPIN club by the Wood County 4-H. The purpose of SPIN clubs is to meet at least six times and focus on a specific topic where kids can learn hands-on. Although the yoga class has already met once, it’s still open for registration. The next Thursday meeting dates are Sept. 28, and Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26 from 5:45-6:30 p.m. at the Richfield Town Hall. Kids can bring a yoga mat and some water to the classes.
Another upcoming SPIN class will be SPARKS. “The club’s focus is on electricity and, like all 4-H projects, will be hands on,” said Laura Huber, 4-H Youth Development Advisor. “We’ll start with learning about simple circuits and will get more complicated as the weeks pass.”
Kids in 6th grade and up will learn how to build circuits, starting with Squishy Circuits, then Snap Circuit kits, before ending with soldering. The class is great, said Jensen, because it could be a future career. The club will meet Sundays starting Oct. 1 until Nov. 5 from 3-4:30 at the Richfield Town Hall. There is a $10 fee per youth, and they do not need to be a member of 4-H to join.
