Shining Stars Child Care: Hands-On Activities Help Kids Grow and Learn

What’s a day in the life like for a child at Shining Stars Child Care?

A big advocate of using play-based learning, the child care center lets kids learn with “free choice” activities to encourage the development of problem-solving skills. Owner Deb Decker notes that it’s lots of fun to work with the children and watch them grow.

Children are divided up by age groups and get their own special schedule based on their age. Toddlers are given an environment to grow, learn sharing and other important social skills, while preschoolers participate in structured activities to learn more about the world around them.

Parents can take a look at the schedule posted outside each classroom to see that month’s activities. A Monday might be spent learning numbers and letters before making a craft, like a snowflake made out of Q-Tips or a handprint. Crafts involve improving fine motor skills, like learning how to use scissors.

Other days can be spent learning colors and shapes, the days of the months, and emotions.

Each day has two physical activities – running, freeze tag, kick ball, duck duck goose, musical chairs, and even yoga, to develop large motor skills. At the sensory table, kids get to play in a sand or rice box, and with silly putty or slime.

All of these activities are meant to be engaging, helpful ways to promote learning while letting kids be kids.

Parents are invited to take a tour at Shining Stars Child Care and ask any questions. The center is located at 1017 Laurel Street. Contact them by calling 715-898-2220.
