by Jess Trad – Enjoy the production of “Singin’ in the Rain Jr” at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County Campus Helen Connor Laird Theatre on August 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and August 12 at 2 p.m. The UW-Marshfield/Wood County Continuing Education program is featuring more than 40 talented youth from the area between the ages of 11 and 18 under the direction of Anne Warren.

The classic musical’s storyline centers around the 1920’s Hollywood transition from silent films to talking pictures. The main characters, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are Hollywood stars who face several challenges in front of and behind the screen. With the help of Kathy Selden, a talented young actress, the production company successfully navigates the transition to “talkies”. The musical features several well-known hits such as “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Good Morning”, and “Make Em’ Laugh”.The musical is filled with dance numbers, comedy, and songs that are sure to entertain all ages.

The cast prepares for several weeks leading up to the shows. They go through a process of auditions and callbacks to determine roles. “During the first couple of weeks, we hit the music hard” director Anne Warren said. “Once they’re well on their way to having it learned, we begin choreography and teach blocking.”

The musical also requires making and fitting costumes, building the set, and gathering props. All of this hard-work can be seen during the performances. “This is a wonderful family-friendly show, and you’ll be humming all the way home!”
