Dinner and a Movie Events

A Night at the Oscars: Dinner & a Movie’s 100th Anniversary Celebration: For anyone who has attended a Dinner event before, join the celebration for the 100th event. An Oscars-themed Awards Party in recognition of all the past Dinner & a Movie showings, the attendees, the movies, the food and of course Julie Tharp. This lively soirée will include hors d’oeuvres, wine, prizes and plenty of reminiscing and socializing.

The Man Who Invented Christmas: This is the comedic dramatization of events leading up to Charles Dickens’s creation of A Christmas Carol. Christopher Plummer plays his imaginary Scrooge who helps Dickens get the story finished on time. A traditional British holiday dinner will appear with some help from the ghost of Christmas present—pigs in the blanket, roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roasted potatoes, Brussel sprouts with bacon balsamic dressing, and plum pudding with brandy butter sauce.

Life is Beautiful: Celebrating twenty years of this still inspiring and heart-warming film which came out around the time we started Dinner and a Movie. Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winner provides comedy, drama, and Tuscan scenery galore. We’ll dine on zucchini timbale, insalata Italiana, porcini and beef stew over polenta, pasta with asparagus and speck, Italian bread, and tiramisu.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: A darkly comic drama with powerhouse Frances McDormand, this film traces a mother’s drastic efforts to get police to take her daughter’s unsolved murder seriously. (This film has lots of strong language and some violence.) Our Missouri fare will include smoked tomato soup, barbecued chicken, creamy cole slaw, sweet potatoes in cinnamon butter, Ozark baked beans, cornbread, and hummingbird cake.

Detrimental Food Ingredients
Have you ever considered the environmental impact of the ingredients in the foods you eat? For example, the massive expansion of palm oil plantations (an ingredient likely in your pantry peanut butter) currently poses a serious threat to orangutan survival. This course will provide information on common ingredients that impact the habitat of other creatures and offer ideas to reduce the impact.

The Wars that Defined our Time
World War I
The “war to end all wars” grew from imperial ambitions fueled by radical nationalism and racism. Class will focus on three key aspects of the war: (a) short-term causes, (b) technological innovations that produced industrial scale murder on the western front, and (c) the political and economic legacies created by the emergence of the Soviet Union exacerbated by the retreat to isolationism by the United States.
World War II
America’s retreat from international affairs contributed to the global economic collapse of 1929. Class will take a brief look at key episodes of the war, along with developments in the following areas (a) the continued role of racism, radical nationalism, and militarism in defining one’s place in the world, (b) the rise of fascism and communism as alternatives to democracy and capitalism, (c) the results of the war that created an American colossus where policies developed to promote international political peace keeping and an accelerated international system of free trade, both in response to the failed policy of “America First” isolationism.

The Second Amendment: Its Past, Its Future, Its Problems, Its Promise
This class will examine the current controversy surrounding gun control in America by addressing the problems of the Second Amendment in contemporary society. Both sides of the gun control debate will be examined for their strengths and weaknesses and the class will conclude with a proposal for solvency of the control issue.
