Toy Drive Donations Stay Local
For the last seventy years, the United States Marine Corps Reserve has made it a mission to bring Christmas to kids whose families cannot afford to give presents.
Send a message of hope by giving to Toys for Tots. The program will be collecting new, unwrapped toys through December 11 at various drop-off spots located throughout Marshfield (see list below). Children and teenagers through age seventeen benefit from the program. Best of all, the gifts stay local.
“Any toys or any monetary donations all stay in Marshfield,” said Margie Schmidt, coordinator, who also makes a point of using any monetary donations to shop locally for Toys for Tots gifts.
When pondering which gifts to donate, Schmidt recommends looking at whatever the popular cartoon or movie of the year was.
“When Frozen was the movie of the year, everyone wanted to get Elsa,” she said. Additionally, Legos always go over well. Other great ideas include books (they never get enough of those), phone accessories for teens, speakers, and earphones.
Teenagers typically get the fewest donations, so most of the monetary donations go toward buying presents for them. Schmidt and the other coordinator go shopping locally and stretch out the funds. “We have a limit on how much we can spend on a gift,” she explained.
It can be difficult to know what teenagers want as gifts, so she always asks the advice of store employees. In the past, teenage boys have wanted Axe products like body spray, and teenage girls like fashion scarves and makeup.
To benefit from Toys for Tots, parents just have to show up to the distribution event (no children allowed), fill out a short form, and select their items. Based on the number of donations, each parent can select at least two toys for their child.
