Librarians Recommend Children’s Book and Upcoming Events for May
Summer is the perfect time for kids to get caught up on book reading! Every month during the summer, the librarians at Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library will share their favorite children’s books and any great upcoming programs for kids. This month, kids will graduate from the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program! Learn more:
“Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
Book reviewed by David Baker – Children’s Information Desk Staff
One of my favorite picture books of all time is Karma Wilson’s “Bear Snores On!”
It’s the story of a bear whose woodland friends make themselves at home in his den while he hibernates. From the very first line, she will have you hooked!
Not only is it a delightful story, but it works on so many levels. It’s a great book for reading aloud, with simple dialog that contains plenty of opportunities for expression. But that same simple dialog makes it a great book for young children to read along or to themselves.
The illustrations are provided by Jane Chapman and work so wonderfully with the book. They too are very simple, great for kids and yet each one of them is a mini work of art. I can’t say enough about them. I guarantee this book will become a bedtime favorite for the whole family. If you enjoy bear and his friends in this book (and I am sure you will), Karma Wilson has collaborated with Jane Chapman on several more bear books.
All of her books impart wonderful messages that proved lots of opportunities for discussion and deal with all sorts of diverse situations like friendship, being scared, feeling sick and so much more. She even has a concept book about colors that features our friend bear. Please check your local library for a complete list of the ‘bear’ books by Karma Wilson.
