Pie & Ice Cream Social at Upham Mansion Celebrates 40th Year

Get Dessert After the Dairyfest Parade

The Pie & Ice Cream Social at Upham Mansion has been a longtime staple of Dairyfest festivities in Marshfield.

The pie and ice cream social dates to 1979, when the Marshfield Area Jaycettes decided during its monthly meeting to put on a pie social at Upham Mansion. In 1982, the event became part of Dairyfest “Cheesetown USA.”

“Ever since then, the NWCHS has kept the pie and ice cream social joined to the Dairyfest weekend,” said Kim Krueger, Coordinator.

The event returns for its 40th year on June 1 from 10-3 p.m., offering a variety of delicious homemade pies and ice cream as its signature menu options. This year, visitors are welcome to stop over after the parade, choose their favorite flavor, and listen to live music performed by Joe Finamore.

Fun carnival games for kids and quality raffle prizes round out the event, the largest fundraiser of the year for the North Wood County Historical Society.

“Kids carnival games this year will consist of ring toss, bean toss, fish pond, floating ducks to name a few,” said Krueger. “We are excited that the Chestnut Center of the Arts will join us and will have an art project for kids to engage in.”

Visitors are welcome to explore the Upham Mansion for free, though donations are appreciated and help continue to preserve the area’s history.

Since June marks the start of dairy month, a new exhibit will debut inside the Upham Mansion featuring barn replicas, including a scale version of the World’s Largest Round Barn last seen at Farm Tech Days 2018 and the Central Wisconsin State Fair. The replica was built last year by Bill Haas of Wisconsin Rapids based on original blueprints obtained from the historical society collection.

Other barns featured in the mini exhibit include Haas’s family’s German-style barn and his wife’s family’s Dutch-style barn. Americana collectible ceramic barns from Figi’s will also be on display.
