Peak Season for Citrus at Festival Foods

Back when oranges were more rare to come by, they made a special treat during the holiday season.

Not many choose to give oranges for Christmas anymore, but citrus is still a fine treat this time of year.

“Now that we have year-round availability we are all a bit spoiled, but this time of year is still the peak season for both freshness and variety,” said Store Director Marty Chy, Festival Foods.

Early winter marks the peak season for citrus in the United States, making it the best time to seek it out.

“Citrus typically starts up in the U.S. over the course of November and December, with Texas grapefruit, Halo clementines, and California navels coming into season,” said Clay Carter, Produce Manager.

Festival Foods is carrying Cara Cara oranges in 3 lb. bags and blood oranges. The store will bring in a big selection for its annual Citrus Fest, set to begin on Jan. 8, 2020.

“Last year we had pummelos, minneola tangelos, and ugli fruit in addition to blood oranges, cara caras, and navels,” said Carter.
