Things to do in Marshfield
I don’t know about you, but when I am hosting people from out of town, I have a “Must Hit List” of Marshfield places I want to share with my guests.
- We have to start the day out right. I figure there is a Starbucks almost everywhere. So I usually like to take my guests to two coffee places in town (usually on different days). We head over to Bigby Coffee at 1710 N. Central Avenue for a mixture of good coffee and sassy customer service. My favorite there happens to be a Frozen Mocha Caramel with no whipped cream… I also like to take my guests to experience the coffee goodness and coffee house ambiance of The Daily Grind at 236 S. Central Avenue I really love the vibe there with the rustic feel and the exposed brick. Added bonus…they have awesome food and good drinks! My favorite is a small ham stacker with sweet potato fries and an iced chai.
- If we haven’t had lunch yet, I am a real sucker for The Kitchen Table, 118 E 3rd Full disclosure…I have been going there since I couldn’t see over the red checked tablecloths and I worked there throughout high school and college. So, I know the food! I love the communal tables where the “regulars” gather for coffee & conversation and a fair amount of b.s. I love their omelets especially the peasant omelets (with potatoes, bacon, onions and cheese). They also have awesome homemade desserts. If you are lucky enough to go on a day when they have strawberry pie or chocolate cake, you need to order them. They are definitely worth the calories.[sam_pro id=”0_5″ codes=”true”]
- If it is time for a little family fun activities…my top choices is the new bear exhibit at the Wildwood Zoo at 608 W. 17th Now I know we have all heard and read a lot about it, but seriously if you haven’t seen it yet, you are missing out. It is a pretty amazing exhibit, especially for a community of our size. And the bears are so young and interactive, it is really fun to sit there and watch them. I recently took my 12-year-old niece that is in from Nashville. First of all she is 12, so she is hard to impress. And she has been to all kinds of huge zoos, SeaWorld and Disney and she loved it and how cute the bears were.
- It’s a little out of town, but I really like going out to Jurustic Park at M222 Sugarbush Lane. It is like a fun combo of zoo and art exhibit looking at all the fun creatures artist/owner Clyde Wynia has created. It is interesting to read all the backgrounds he has created for his creations.
- If my visitors are here on a Saturday, I love to take the Blue Heron BrewPub, 108 W. 9th Street, for their fish tacos. It has to be Saturday, because that is the day they run the special. I had never had a fish taco before a friend convinced me to try them, but they are delicious. They have a puffed, fried shell stuffed with fish, slaw, cilantro, and the best part…the spicy Baja sauce. I am salivating just thinking about it.
- And of course, if we have gone to the Zoo, we need to stop for ice cream. I vacillate between a few options. (So hopefully there are a couple days to the visit so we can try them all.) An oldie, but goody is of course Melody Gardens at 1200 S. Oak Avenue. They have both hand scooped and soft serve that they make in house. Whenever I go there, I have flashbacks to childhood skating nights (they have a skating rink attached). But, I also love the choices at the Dairy Queen, 1600 S. Roddis Avenue, on this end of town, that you can walk to from the park. I love blizzards, and love the new mini option since I can never quite finish a Blizzard. My niece’s current favorite is the cotton candy option. I am partial to the Butterfinger Blizzard. And now, since Hub City Ice Cream, 1610 S. Central Avenue, opened, we have a third option! Also, within walking distance from the park and the pool…they have really fun flavors that they rotate in and out so there is always something different.
Of course, there are many other awesome options when visiting Marshfield, but these are my personal top must hit list when I want to share a little taste of the town I call home with my visitors.
