Memorial Walk to Dedicate Athletic Fields on 8th Street

Memorial Walk Raises Awareness About Common Cancer.

A 3-mile walk/run will be held September 23 at UW-Marshfield/Wood County to honor the memory of community member John Harrington, who passed last September after a 15-year battle with prostate cancer.

An advocate for staying physically active, John’s philosophy every day was “what will I do for my exercise today?”

Registration begins at 7 until 8:15 a.m. in the gymnasium lobby. Strollers and pets are welcome. The start of the race will be at 7th street by the gym parking lot at 8:30, and follows a course designed by John for a wellness run that began in the late 80s and ran until 1992, in order to promote community wellness.

Dedication of John Harrington Memorial Athletic Fields at the end of 8th street will follow at 9:30, where there are tennis courts and ball fields. Cost for participation is $15. Funds raised will go toward prostate cancer research efforts at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.

September is also prostate cancer awareness month. The American Cancer Society estimates that the cancer is the most common for American men besides skin cancer, and that 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
