Library Book Club to Discuss ‘Life of Pi,’ ‘The Cherry Harvest’

The Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library is offering two upcoming book clubs. Beginning August 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the J.P. Adler Program Room, the ERMPL Book Club will read Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Life of Pi follows Pi Patel, a sixteen year-old who is emigrating with his family from India to North America with their zoo animals and finds himself stranded on a lifeboat along with a hyena, orangutan, wounded zebra, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Pi’s encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior allows him to coexist with the tiger for 227 days. Pi lands on the coast of Mexico and tells his incredible story to unbelieving authorities, and then tells a second, less fantastical story. But is it more true?

The following book club meeting will be September 24 at 6:30 p.m. and will be discussing The Cherry Harvest by Lucy Sanna. The Christiansen family has struggled through the war and money is scarce. Charlotte’s son is fighting in Europe, her teenage daughter dreams of being a writer, and her husband works to keep the farm going.

Charlotte manages to get help from German war prisoners to work the threatened cherry harvest, including a teacher named Karl, who she finds herself drawn to. Meanwhile, she fails to see that her daughter is growing up with temptations of her own, including a secret romance. When her son Ben returns home bearing wounds and an intense prejudice against Germans, Charlotte’s secrets threaten to explode around them.
