Registration Open to 6-9th Graders
Being a kid is tougher than it used to be.
“Youth are facing so much more than just a generation ago. With an iPhone in their hands, they have access to the internet, and with that, so many apps that keep them connected, But kids are feeling less connected than ever before,” said Brent Aschenbrenner, Area Representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
With social media like Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Whisper, Omegle, or Monkey, youth are exposed constantly to inappropriate pics, texts and a world of bullying. To cope, they can turn to drugs, self-harm, or isolationism, while family dynamics lead them to feel unloved and unneeded.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is hosting a LEAP conference, an event for awareness and action. The Personal Development Center will address topics like social media awareness, cyberbullying, positive boundaries and warning signs in dating relationships. Participants will learn more about area drug trends by Marshfield Area Coalition for Youth, and QPR suicide prevention by Liz Gosse from Youth for Christ, and watch a presentation by a trained John Maxwell Leadership Member. The event will including a discussion on building positive relationships and developing Christian disciplines.
“This conference will help kids to be more aware of changes that students are experiencing and how to avoid or successfully navigate more common situations that are happening on school campuses,” said Aschenbrenner. “We are excited to see you learn and grow from this conference.”
For kids entering 6-9th grade, the 24-hour event will take place August 15-16 at Woodfield Inn & Suites for $30 a person, which includes a bible, hotel stay at Woodfield Inn & Suites, supper Thursday night and Lunch Friday morning. Volunteers in 10th-12th grade are needed to lead huddles, and cost is free. All training will be done at Zion United Methodist Church.
