Are you mulching your tree the right way? In this video, Luke from Haas Tree Care shares the difference between a mulch volcano and a mulch “donut.”
Placing mulch around your tree is a great idea, unless you’re doing it wrong! Mulch is a great way to add micro and macro nutrients to your soil, keep those pesky strim trimmers and lawnmowers away, as well as aid in water retention.
Unfortunately, one of the most common mulching mistakes is creating a mulch “volcano.” These volcanoes add excess moisture to the trunk of the tree, causing fungal diseases or girdling roots. The best method to use is to make a mulch “donut” or “moat.”
Basically, keep any mulch away from the trunk and add a little extra around the outer ring. If you’re reapplying mulch, ensure that you remove the old layer before placing down the fresh mulch! Remember, if you have any questions on trees, consult your local ISA Certified Arborist®.
