Laura Schmitt Hiller has been capturing important life moments for more than a decade, first as a news photographer and then as a wedding and portrait photographer and owner of her own business, Laura Schmitt Photography.
“I went to the University of Iowa for photojournalism (B.A) and fine art photography (B.F.A),” said Hiller. “I started at the Marshfield News-Herald as a photographer in 2007 through spring of 2013. I went full-time with my business in April 2013.”
Hiller enjoys all aspects of photography, but especially cherishes those sessions that involve couples and families.
“I believe that in life, to love is one of the biggest adventures of all,” she said. “From the moment you embark on your adventure as husband and wife to your first (or third) baby, I am so honored to photograph your life-long journey together.”
Hiller has enjoyed photographing the same couples from engagement to wedding to children, and her style is unique – designed to capture not just formal settings, but the life moments in-between.
“My background is in journalism, so I like to photograph families more as a lifestyle session,” she added. “I like to capture the moments of the day, rather than just people smiling at the camera. Those in-between moments show more emotion.”
Schmitt said that photos are a great gift idea for the family, especially mothers.
“Time goes by so fast. As a mom, you are always there in the photo, but usually behind the camera,” she said. “It’s important to get in front of the camera for your children to have photos and a document of this time. I feel like as moms we keep so many memories and a family record for our kids. Keeping ourselves out of images leaves a big hole the story.”
