Haunted House Collects Donations for Local Causes

Halloween night isn’t complete without a few scares.

Each October, the Schober family sets up a spectacular haunted house for the enjoyment of trick-or-treaters. The setup has grown a lot in the past eight years the family has hosted the event in their yard. Last year, they handed out 800 bags worth of candy and estimate about 1,200 kids and adults alike braved the haunted house.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” said Jennifer Schober. “We enjoy doing it.” Everyone from her parents to the grandkids gets involved with setting up the decorations and getting in costume. Her daughter, a cosmologist, does skillful make-up for the actors.

While the haunted house is free, the Schobers will again be collecting much-needed donations for Marshfield Area Pet Shelter and also food items for Soup or Socks (please check expiration dates). Donations of dog and cat food, litter, bleach, paper towels and more are accepted. Cash donations will be used to purchase items for the pet shelter.

Jennifer’s 12 year-old son, who puts lots of time into the setup, is a huge animal lover. “He said, ‘People can get jobs, animals can’t,’” she noted.

The haunted house will be open for free from 5-9 p.m. on Halloween at the corner of W. 5th Street and Lincoln Avenue (1701 W 5th).

A lot of time goes into the makeup of the actors.
