Fall Brings Colorful Landscapes to Central Wisconsin

Where to Enjoy the Fall Colors in Central WI

The author Albert Camus once wrote that “Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf becomes a flower.” Peak colors are projected to arrive in the Marshfield area during the third week of October.

Whether you prefer a walk in the woods or a driving tour, there are unlimited ways to black-river-rainbowexplore nature’s fall fireworks. There are always random variations in local patterns of leaf colors due to the different mixes of trees, density of the forests and amounts of moisture. So the best way to ensure you’ll see the most spectacular color displays is to experiment with different spots and vantage points.

One good bet to see a vibrant mix of colors is at Wildwood Park. Visitors can use the car path to loop around the large animal enclosures and take in a wide vista before driving into the heart of the forest. Those who want a bit more exercise and a closer inspection of the leaves should park their cars in the south parking lot and walk through the several hiking paths.

To the south, drive to County Road W and over to State Highway 73 toward Black River State Forest. Along the way there are unlimited places that highlight the contrast between the browning corn and soybeans with the red and orange hues of the maples, white birches and oaks.

To the north, the road toward Wausau offers a number of equally impressive options. For example, take the back roads, such as County Road H, along the southern border of the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area and then head north on Interstate 39. The climax on this drive will certainly come shortly after entering Rib Mountain State Park (there is an $8 vehicle entry fee). Those brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the park’s famous observation tower will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city and the meandering Wisconsin River, surrounded by the gentle rolling hills and the leaves in all their glory.

However you chose to do it, the time is right to grab your pumpkin spice coffee, head outdoors and soak up this beautiful time of year!
