Join UW-Marshfield/Wood County in Celebrating Brain Awareness Week

In honor of Brain Awareness Week (March 10-16), Continuing Education is offering two brain-boosting classes taught by Dr. Jeffrey C. Amundson.  Amundson, a member of the Department of Psychology at UW-Marshfield/Wood County. He has done research on how the brain works and has worked with tests of concussion for athletes at all levels including the NFL and is developing a test for traumatic brain injury in veterans.

There are daily news stories about Alzheimer’s, concussions, or veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury. Brain awareness week is an annual global campaign developed by The Dana Foundation to educate the public about how brain research can benefit people affected by such brain issues.

On March 10th and 12th Amundson will highlight the brain with two classes open to the public.

Brain Basics held March 10th will explore the amazing feats of the brain.  The brain enables us to recognize faces, smell a flower, solve a problem, and more.  Learn about the different parts of the brain and their functions. Can a bump on the head cause a change in personality?    Do we really only use 10% of our brain?  Find out in this class, as we examine what’s really going on in your head.

The Aging Brain held March 12th will discuss how aging can change how the brain works. The course will offer ideas on how to maintain a healthy brain. Dr. Amundson has done research on how the brain works.  Find out whether crossword puzzles and other mental exercises can help prolong the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.  Learn what steps you can take to help maintain a healthy brain at every age.

Take one course for $15 or take both for $25.  Pre-registration is required.  Register online at www.marshfied.uwc.edu/ce or by calling the Continuing Education Office at 715-389-6520.
