Dairyfest Survival Guide

Born and bred in Marshfield, I have attended at least some part of Dairyfest almost every year for my entire life.

But this year I have family coming from out of town for Dairyfest weekend!  And since they are from a big city in the south, I feel like they are in for a shock for their first small-town, northern “fest.” So I created a (what I hope is) helpful Dairyfest Survival Guide in preparation.

1. Sunscreen. Do not do Dairyfest, especially the parade, without sunscreen! Two of the worst sunburns of my life were at the Dairyfest Parade when I had neglected sunscreen. And just because the forecast is overcast doesn’t mean you can’t get a sunburn…you can get some nasty ones on a gloomy day!

2. Cash. Like most people my age, I don’t tend to carry a lot of cash as a rule. But, on Dairyfest weekend, you need it. There are entry fees in some places, and food and craft vendors, many of which only take cash.  So don’t forget to go to the bank today!

3. Tummy aids. I am sorry but most weekends don’t start with ice cream at 7 a.m. like Dairyfest weekend. And there is also lots of milk and cheese. All great items in my estimation, but it can be hard on the digestive system. So, for comfort you might want to keep a few Tums (or your favorite product ) handy.

4. Rain gear. Sadly, it seems like it will be rainy for at least parts of Dairyfest. But don’t fear! Just pack rain jacket and/or umbrella and hopefully Mother Nature will have mercy on our community’s plans. If you have kids and are planning to attend Picnic in the Park….if it is wet…I would suggest the kiddos wear galoshes because it can get a little muddy with all the people walking around.

5. A small bag. If you are a mom, you will likely have a bag or purse on you. But, if not, take a little bag with you. There tends to be lots of little freebies or materials from vendors, etc…and it is nice to have somewhere to put all the stuff while you are walking around.

6. Water. Don’t forget to hydrate while you are having all your fun. The weekend will be much more enjoyable if you don’t feel icky and passy-outy (my own technical term).

Good luck on your Dairyfest adventures this weekend! Try to stay dry and have fun.
