Carnival Games and Grill-Out Options New to Dairyfest Tradition
The Pie & Ice Cream Social at Upham Mansion has been a Dairyfest tradition since 1982.
“We often hear, ‘I grew up coming to the Social’ or even ‘This was where we had our first date,” said Kim Krueger, Coordinator. “The event offers a laid back, non-rushed opportunity to sit down on a lawn, visit with folks while listening to live music and munching on a piece of yummy pie. Kids will have the opportunity to play some old style carnival games too.”
This year, the North Wood County Historical Society has expanded the menu offerings to include brats, hot dogs, chips, and a lemonade stand. Most of the pies are homemade by NCWHS members and include a variety of flavors such as apple, cherry, blueberry, rhubarb, strawberry, and pecan. Perkins also donates a few pies.
“Romelle Bymers brings some of her homemade ice cream, but you have to get there early as it goes fast!” said Krueger.
Kids will enjoy old fashioned games like a fishing pond, bean bag can toss, pick a duckie, and ring toss. There will be an art spot for kids put on by the Chestnut Center for the Arts. Additionally, buy a few raffle tickets on-site to enter for one of the twenty baskets donated by area businesses. Prizes include gift certificates from the Lumberyard, Hewitt’s Meats, PJ’s Tropical Wine & Liquor, Marshfield Country Club, and Schalow’s Nursery.

Those who stop by can take a tour of the Victorian mansion for free (donations appreciated) and check out the working tool exhibit featuring tolls from around the turn of the 20th century. “These have been in our artifact collection for many years and have not been on display for a long time,” Krueger said. “The tools were owned by the Hans Bille family and the Harold Blum family. This mini exhibit will be in the Sun room, just off the Parlor.”
The Social acts as the historical society’s biggest fundraiser of the year. “The NWCHS is a nonprofit organization and we rely on the memberships, donations, and contributions that come in to help support our mission of preserving the North Wood County history and the Governor W.H. Upham House,” said Krueger.
Located close by the downtown area, it’s an easy walk from the parade to the mansion located on W 3rd Street. The Social will take place Saturday, June 2 from 10-3 p.m.
