Latest “Cooking With Ruth” Episode Features Pie and Previews PDC Fundraiser
In the latest episode of Cooking with Ruth, Ruth Elderbrook and co-host/husband Gary, made a special dessert and previewed the upcoming fundraiser for Personal Development Center (PDC). Joined by PDC’s Julie Tharp, the couple shared their recipe for Derby Pie.
Taking place on February 9, the 13th annual “Sheltering Hearts Mardi Gras” fundraiser helps support the mission and services of PDC’s domestic violence and sexual assault services.
Also a contributor to the live auction with their famous “Tower of 200 Cupcakes,” the Elderbrooks are especially attached to the PDC mission since the death of their daughter Melissa, a victim of domestic violence, in 2003.
“The first time, 13 years ago, when we went to Sheltering Hearts, we were sitting there listening to a young woman tell her story about how PDC had really saved her life from a violent partner, and it was shortly before that time that our daughter, Melissa, had died,” recalled Ruth.
“It was sitting there listening to her that I realized Melissa was another statistic of domestic violence, and it just kind of brought it all home that anybody and everybody can be affected by domestic violence,” she added. “What PDC does is so wonderful because they’ve helped so many women and children through difficult situations.”
As a private, non-profit organization dedicated to creating a community free from the threat of violence, PDC assists those in distress by identifying options and resources, promoting safety, building hope, and strengthening individuals, families, and the community through case management, advocacy, and education.
Derby pie will be served as dessert at their Sheltering Hearts fundraiser on February 9. Featuring a sit-down dinner, live and silent auctions, and a cash bar, the event will take place from 5:30-9:30pm at RiverEdge Golf Course. All are welcome.
