Celebrate June Dairy Month

By Kenni Bores, Ag Correspondent – With June comes summer vacation, graduation parties, and to the hard-working dairy farmers, a month to celebrate the products that they work day in and day out to produce.

June Dairy Month was started in 1937 in an attempt to increase the amount of dairy products moving from store shelves. Since then, dairy promotion organizations and supermarkets have worked together to continue to push dairy sales and educate consumers on the healthful benefits of consuming dairy products.

Dairy is a huge part of Wisconsin tradition and is evident in Wood county’s agricultural industry. With three cheese processors and five cheese production plants throughout the county, milk processing alone contributes over $550 million to the local economy every year.

One way that Central Wisconsin loves to celebrate agriculture is with dairy breakfasts. There’s still five more dairy breakfasts to attend throughout Wood and Clark county before June Dairy Month comes to a close including ones in Loyal, Chili, Auburndale, Colby, and Greenwood. A full list of Wisconsin dairy breakfasts can be found at hooraywisconsindairy.com. Try to stop out at one and enjoy the tradition of eating a home cooked meal, meeting the farmers that work to produce the food you eat, and visiting farms.

As June comes to an end, celebrate dairy with a glass of milk with cookies, extra cheese on your pizza, and end the day with a delicious bowl of ice cream.
