Marshfield Student Artwork on Display at New Visions Gallery
Kids have the chance to display their masterpieces at the 33rd annual Emerging Talents exhibit at New Visions Gallery.
198 pieces of student artwork, beginning in pre-kindergarten through high school, were selected by Marshfield area art educators the this year’s exhibit. The public is welcome to view the variety of artwork, including paintings, collage, jewelry, and ceramics, at a free opening reception Sunday, March 4 from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and kids can participate in hands-on art activities.
All Marshfield public and private schools are invited to participate in Emerging Talents. Guest judge, local artist Carmen Duran, will award ten Excellence Awards to high school students. Each award winner will receive a gift certificate sponsored by Blick Art Materials toward art supplies.
“I really enjoy seeing all the kids’ artwork and their creativity – from the wild, unrestricted abandon of the grade school level to the more refined craft of the high schoolers,” said gallery director Bobbie Erwin. “It’s always new each year and a treat to install the exhibit.”
The importance of art education has been well documented, she added. Research has shown that a visual arts education is integral to the student development in language development, motor skills, decision-making, visual learning, inventiveness, cultural awareness and overall academic performance. Students that participate in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, according to studies by Americans for the Arts.
“Having their teachers choose and recognize a student’s work in this way, then being exhibited in a professional gallery, can help keep a child interested in including art in their education after they are ‘required’ to,” said Erwin.
Emerging Talents will be on exhibit March 5 through April 27 at New Visions Gallery, which is located in the lobby of Marshfield Clinic (1000 North Oak Avenue, Marshfield). School and community group tours are available for this exhibit. Interested parties should contact New Visions Gallery to schedule a date and time. “Emerging Talents” can be viewed Monday – Friday 9-4 p.m. at New Visions Gallery.
