Adult Winter Reading Program Returns

Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library to Host Adult Winter Reading Program

Grab a blanket and a cup of tea and snuggle in for the last month of a cold winter with a good book.  The Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library is again offering their Adult Winter Reading Program that runs from January 22 – February 28, 2017.

Now in its 10th year, the reading program is offered to those 17 and older.  Helping to coordinate is Steve Apfel, Library Specialist III, who says that it is for people at all reading levels.

“The Adult Winter Reading Program is an annual event that encourages continued literacy and reading among adults,” stated Afpel.  “By having the program last for six weeks, the hope is that all who wish to participate are able to finish at least one book.”

Along with a variety of written books, audio books are also accepted submissions.  While reading a child’s book will not count, the goal is to simply have patrons read whatever they can.  Bingo type cards will also be offered to help expand people’s interest in other genres and also add a fun twist to the program.

As an added bonus, prizes have been donated by local businesses in support of the library.

“Last year a change was made to the program to only include prizes from locally owned and operated businesses. We believe that a solid library and locally-run businesses are both key to a thriving community and we seek to highlight the importance of both,” said Apfel.

Once signed up, readers will keep a log of the books they finish and then have that log initialed by a library staff member.  Once initialed, the reader will get a ticket to put towards a prize that interests them.  Prizes will be on display in the atrium of the library.  Twenty-two different business and individuals have contributed, including Melody Gardens, Rose Bowl Lanes and The Rivers Tavern.

Said Apfel, “Readers must simply write down their name, phone number, and the number of the prize they are interested in on their ticket. Tickets will then be deposited in a box with numbered slots corresponding to the prize numbers.”

In 2016, 143 patrons read a total of 1,183 books.  Each of the past 10 years has seen these numbers increase.  That is the hope for 2017 as well.  This will also present opportunities for visitors to check out the new library and all it has to offer.

Those interested in the program can sign up at the Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library at either of the Information Desks starting on January 22nd.
