4 Tips to Freshen up your Planters for Fall
Are your summer flowers looking a bit tired these days? Maybe you’ve missed a few waterings? No sweat, it’s time to freshen up your containers for fall! Check out Mill Creek Garden’s 4 tips to make an inviting fall display.
1. Reuse summer plants in your fall containers – plants like grass, Ivy, Vinca Vine, Creeping Jenny, & Black Eyed Susans continue to look nice even as the weather gets cooler. In our planter, we were able to reuse the Vinca Vine & Ivy, while I needed to add a rooster grass for some height and replace the Gaura & Eucalyptus we had in the planter for summer.
2. Refresh with garden mums or asters – mums & asters come in many colors and bloom until frost. These plants can be placed tightly in your planter as they won’t grow to be much bigger. In our planter, we put in one 10 inch Ashley Orange mum and two 6 inch Michelle Gold mums. The key to healthy mums is good drainage in your container (I drilled holes in the bottom of my container) & all-purpose fertilizer once a week to keep the blooms looking great.
3. Consider adding curly willow for unique dimension in your planter – curly willow is a type of twig that is often used by florists in bouquets and flower arrangements. These twigs give rustic texture and can be used again in a Christmas arrangement!
4. Pair your planter with rustic antiques & a fall inspired sign – Rustic props add to the nostalgic nature of fall. Adding these props not only makes an eye catching display, but also creates a welcoming appeal for your guests.
Mill Creek Gardens would love to help you create a beautiful fall display on your front porch! Stop out for mums, other fall-hearty plants, curly willow, & even some unique antiques. Sign-up for our rustic sign painting class on September 16th and make your own fall-inspired sign.
